French Level Test
Find out which level of French suits you, from complete beginner to proficient.
The six tests below follow the Common European Framework levels, A1 to C2, the same scale used by language schools and by exam certificates such as DELF and DALF. Each one is free, marked instantly, and explains every answer. Choose the level you think is closest to yours.
- Each test has 20 marked questions: 15 on grammar and vocabulary, and 5 on a reading text.
- It takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Please work without a dictionary or translation tool so the result is accurate.
- There is also a short writing task. It is not marked automatically, but you can send it to me with your score for feedback.
- Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is saved. Your answers stay in your browser, so please finish in one sitting.
- Not sure where to start? Begin with A2. Your result will tell you whether to move up or down.
What to do with your result
The level that fits you is usually the one where you score between 12 and 16. A score of 17 or more means you are working comfortably above it, and under 12 means the level below will give you firmer ground. If two levels feel close, start with the lower one. It is much easier to move up than to fill gaps later.
If you would like a second opinion, or feedback on the writing task, send me your result and I will tell you where I would start. You can also read how French lessons work, or work through the free French resources at your own pace.
