Morisyen (Mauritian Creole) lessons and resources
Morisyen — Mauritian Creole — is spoken by over a million people, and there is very little structured teaching material for it anywhere. These lessons and guides are built from scratch.
Who this is for
- Heritage speakers who understand more than they can say, or who want to read and write the language properly
- Families with Mauritian roots wanting children to keep the language
- Travellers going to Mauritius who would rather not rely on French or English
- Anyone curious about a creole language with a genuinely distinctive grammar
How lessons work
Lessons are one to one and built around what you actually want to do with the language — talking to family, travelling, or working through the writing system. Because Morisyen has no standard published course, materials are written for each student rather than taken off a shelf.
Free guides
- Kreol: History and Evolution — where the language came from
- Kreol: Syntax — how sentences are built
- Kreol: Pronunciation — a phonetic guide
- Kreol: To or Ou? — the polite form of "you"
There is also a free Morisyen taster course in the course library.
