Morisyen (Mauritian Creole) lessons and resources

Morisyen — Mauritian Creole — is spoken by over a million people, and there is very little structured teaching material for it anywhere. These lessons and guides are built from scratch.

Who this is for

  • Heritage speakers who understand more than they can say, or who want to read and write the language properly
  • Families with Mauritian roots wanting children to keep the language
  • Travellers going to Mauritius who would rather not rely on French or English
  • Anyone curious about a creole language with a genuinely distinctive grammar

How lessons work

Lessons are one to one and built around what you actually want to do with the language — talking to family, travelling, or working through the writing system. Because Morisyen has no standard published course, materials are written for each student rather than taken off a shelf.

Free guides

There is also a free Morisyen taster course in the course library.

Getting started
