A Level French Vocabulary Crosswords

Twenty-nine interactive French crosswords for A level, thirty key words each, with full vocabulary lists and definitions in French.

Each crossword covers one subtopic and can be done in the browser on a phone or a laptop. Clues can be read as French definitions or as English translations, and each grid saves your progress in your own browser so you can come back to it. Underneath every crossword there is the complete word list with genders, English meanings and French definitions, which is the part worth revising from.

Number of crosswords by specification: AQA (13), Edexcel (12), Eduqas (19), Cambridge 9898 (22), Edexcel IAL (20). A subtopic often appears on more than one specification, so the numbers add up to more than 29.

How to get the most out of them

Start with the French definitions rather than the English. Reading round a word you do not know is exactly what the reading paper asks you to do, and a definition in French gives you a usable paraphrase for the speaking exam as well. Switch to English only when you are stuck.

Use Check grid when you think a section is finished rather than after every word, so that you are testing your recall and not the button. If a word will not come, reveal a single letter instead of the whole word. When you have finished, open the vocabulary list and write out the ten words you did not know.
